How to Paint the Bathtub?

If your cast-iron tub is looking a little rundown, save some money and give it a new coat of paint rather than replacing it. After filling in any gaps or cracks, sanding down the interior and exterior, and giving it a few coats of acrylic urethane enamel paint, you’ll have a bathtub that looks brand new. It’ll cost you about $450 to refinish your tub yourself, versus over $3000 to replace it.

Leave the tub alone until it has cured completely. Don’t step in it, run any water, or use it it any way. Follow the paint manufacturer’s instructions for the curing time, which is generally around 24 hours. You can also use a heat lamp to speed up the curing time, but that could also cause discoloration in the paint.

Remove the masking tape and reattach the tub fixtures. Once the tub is dry, you can remove all the plastic sheeting and tape and replace the drain and faucet. Throw the sheeting and tape away. You may also want to mop the floor and give the rest of the bathroom a thorough wipe-down to catch any dust or dirt left behind from the painting process.

Re-caulk the tub before you use it again to protect it from mold. Use a caulking gun to reapply the caulk to the areas where the tub meets the shower, if that’s applicable. Follow the instructions for the brand you purchased and let it dry before you use the tub. Caulk can take 24 hours to cure, but it’s generally safe to expose it to water after a few hours.

Spray painting is generally an easier process because you won’t have to lean over the tub and risk smearing the paint. Similarly, if you’re painting the tub by hand, use long, even strokes to coat the tub’s entirety.

How to Clean a Shower/Tub the Easy Way?

Do you LOVE a sparkling clean shower stall but HATE cleaning one? Me too! I started using this method about 20 years ago out of necessity because I had to clean 6-8 bathrooms a day thoroughly and QUICKLY while working for a residential cleaning service.

Ventilate bathroom and quickly spray soap scum type cleaner on entire shower stall and tub, concentrating spray on the parts that need extra attention (tub ring, etc.) Leave the room and find something else to clean! Let the spray do the work for about 10-15 minutes.

When you return – get the broom just slightly wet under tub faucet – then turn the water OFF. Use the broom to scrub and sweep the scum away working from top of stall walls down to bottom of tub – concentrating of worst areas. You can use the tips of bristles to clean grout and crevices, also great around the faucets and drain.

Run tub faucet using warm water. While water is running rinse the broom. Fill your container of choice with fresh water from the tub and rinse walls and tub several times. Use the broom to rinse walls and sweep the remainder of dissolved soap scum into the tub and down the drain – rinse thoroughly.

Enjoy your sparkling tub and shower stall. After you’ve worn the lemon down, simply grab the other half or cut a new one and keep going over the area until it’s spotless. Just as a precaution, avoid using lemon in conjunction with other green cleaning ingredients like sea salt. Even water-soluble abrasives may be enough to scratch up acrylic.

How Removing Tough Stains?

Dissolve limescale buildup with equal parts vinegar and water. Avoid using commercial products that have anti-limescale ingredients since they could leave the enamel looking dull. Instead, remove the chalky buildup by mixing together equal parts of white vinegar and water. Dip a soft cloth into the diluted vinegar and rub it on the limescale until it dissolves. Rinse the area and dry it immediately.

Avoid rubbing the diluted vinegar over other parts of the tub that don’t have limescale since this could damage it. Apply diluted chlorine bleach to stains. For most stains, mix together 1/2 cup (120 ml) of chlorine bleach and 1 gallon (3.8 liters) of water. Dip a cloth in the solution and rub it over the stain. You can also spray the solution directly on the stain. Let the bleach solution sit for 1 to 2 minutes and then rinse it off. Dry the tub once the stain is removed.

Do not apply bleach right after you apply vinegar, as they will form a noxious gas if they mix. When you need to use both vinegar and bleach, make sure you thoroughly rinse away the vinegar before you apply the bleach, and vice versa.

Soak stains with a paste of hydrogen peroxide and cream of tartar. If you have tougher stains that don’t disappear after using the bleach solution, make a gentle cleaning paste. Mix together 1 part hydrogen peroxide with 2 parts cream of tartar. Spread this paste over the stains and let it sit for 30 minutes to 1 hour. Use a soft cloth to wipe away the paste and then rinse the area. Dry it if the stains are gone.

As an alternative, you can use baking soda and vinegar to remove tough stains. Sprinkle the baking soda over the stain, then spray vinegar onto the baking soda. The vinegar and baking soda will react to each other, creating a foam. Let the foam sit for 5-10 minutes, then scrub it away with a clean cloth. If the stains aren’t gone, you can repeat the treatment until they disappear.

How Deciding Bathroom Mirror on Style?

Buy a frameless mirror if you want a contemporary look. Frameless mirrors create a sleek, “floating” effect that suits a modern bathroom. Frameless mirrors will usually need to be glued onto the wall to avoid the appearance of bulky hooks. You can also use picture wire or mirror mounting clips to seamlessly mount or hang a frameless mirror.

Choose a framed mirror for easier hanging. Make sure to choose a frame that matches the décor in your bathroom. For example, choose a cherry wood frame if your bathroom cabinets or vanity are done in cherry, or choose a tiled frame to match your bathroom tiles.

The mirror in your bathroom can also be a fun statement piece. Consider a mirror with a brightly colored or mosaic-style frame, or try a mirror with a unique shape (like a crescent moon or heart) to add flair and style. Narrow frames are best for smaller mirrors and create a sleek, modern look for the space. Thicker frames tend to be richer and more ornate.

Buy a custom-cut mirror and frame for an unusually-sized space. Though it’s typically more expensive and less convenient to buy a custom-made mirror and frame, they can create a unique effect. If you’re framing your mirror separately, ask for frame samples from a framing website or frame/mirror store to decide whether a frame is the right look for your mirror and bathroom.

Create a template for the shape of the mirror. Cut a piece of paper or poster board in your desired shape and hang it on the wall using tape to get an idea of how a style will look in your bathroom. This will save you time and money if you decide the style isn’t what you’re looking for. Making a template can also help you determine if the mirror you have in mind will be the right size for your space.
